DUNYHA
“One type of music that I’ve always found lacking in Budapest is the convergence of the familiarity of folk music and the unpredictability of the avant-garde. Within the framework of her new band DUNYHA, transylvanian singer Ilka Kisgyörgy interfered in this situation… With the help of an international cast of characters that are primarily known as veteran free jazz musicians.”
Işik Sarihan, Inverted Spectrum Records
Experimental Budapest-based project DUNYHA cracks Transylvanian folk songs and lets their emotional core spill into the present. Led by vocalist Ilka Kisgyörgy, the ensemble blends free improvisation with flashes of punk and doom metal, creating a sound that feels both ancient and boldly new. Built around the idea of the »untouched ear«, the musicians approach folk material from outside the tradition, allowing instinct to guide them rather than inherited rules. The result is a set of interpretations that are unpolished, immediate, and deeply affecting.
